Elizabeth Appleton is a sweet and easy-going adolescent. But as she turns sixteen, she discovers something so devastating about herself that her whole world is turned upside down. Elizabeth has been born without a womb or a vagina and is diagnosed with MRKH, an unusual congenital disorder that affects the female reproductive tract. Frightened and confused, Elizabeth must struggle to understand how she can still be a girl but no longer a 'normal' one. As she questions everyone and everything around her - her burgeoning sexuality, her gender, her hopes for the future - Elizabeth must fight against the shame and betrayal she feels if she is to ever become the woman she has always hoped to be. In her first novel, Cecilia Paul, now a retired expert in the field of MRKH, sensitively explores and illuminates this complex and often emotionally fraught medical condition, in order to raise public awareness of MRKH and to support those affected by it.

Elizabeth Just Sixteen Cecilia Paul 9781911110408 Books Reviews
When teenager Elizabeth Appleton seeks medical advice to find out why her periods haven't started, she is dealt a shocking blow - she can never have children. It transpires she has Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKH) - a congenital disorder affecting the female reproductive tract. The discovery throws the young woman into turmoil, questioning everything she has assumed about herself and her body thus far. How can she be a 'normal' girl if she can't do the things other girls her age can do? The horror of the situation even prompts her to beg her parents not to tell anyone. In time, however, and with the support of her family and through sharing experiences with another young woman who also has MRKH, Elizabeth is able to begin to look to the future with hope.
First-time novelist Cecilia Paul explores this unusual condition in a bid to raise public awareness of MRKH and its sufferers. While the book is informative and educational and gives a rare insight into the difficulties facing women with MRKH, the writing was rather dry and matter-of-fact and for the most part didn't engage me. To be honest, the book wasn't suggestive of a novel at all, and often felt as if I were reading a well-researched article in a medical journal. For anyone with a particular interest in the syndrome, I'm sure it'll serve as a valuable and positive account of this life-changing condition, but as a novel it didn't work for me.
I received this e-book from Authoright in exchange for an honest review.
This book appealed to my medical background (nurse) and also to my current personal circumstances of battling a very rare cancer and always trying to raise awareness.
So with that in mind I delved into this with interest. While I had heard of the condition previously Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKH) it’s not a name that slips off the tongue easily.
Elizabeth begins to realise something maybe wrong when all her friends had started their monthly cycles years before but there was no sign of hers. After investigation she is diagnosed with MRKH .. which means she has no uterus or vagina. This understandably throws the young girls’ life into turmoil, she feels, abnormal, freaky, non-feminine etc. I got the impression at that age she was more concerned about a potential sex life rather then future children.
She has a supportive family and in time she learns to cope with the treatment and feels strong enough to assist fellow suffers. This is quite an emotional read but also interesting and will enlighten the reader to this congenital disease. The writing is easy to comprehend and satisfied my curiosity about the condition. While it also encompasses the rest of her life it will mainly appeal to people with a medical interest I think.
While I appreciate for a young girl or indeed an older woman, questioning their femininity and ability to reproduce may be devastating, from a personal point of view I felt it was something that could be dealt with and they can lead a ‘normal’ life. With other life threatening illnesses this isn’t always possible. So I admit perhaps my overall view of the book was clouded from that aspect but this in no way detracts from the story.
Many thanks to the author and Clink Street Publishing for the ARC.
